Reasons You May Need to Visit Your Podiatrist

Health & Medical Blog

The human foot is a complex appendage comprising a myriad of tissues, ligaments, joints, tendons and bones. All these work in tandem to ensure that your weight is appropriately balanced as they propel you as you perambulate. Thus, it should not be surprising that there is a high chance of something going wrong if you do not take appropriate care of your feet. Generally, foot problems tend to dissipate over time without medical assistance. Perhaps you are experiencing some minor swelling or maybe your foot becomes inflamed due to being up and about all day. In these instances, home care will get you foot back in shape. However, there are occasions that may require you to visit a podiatrist to ensure the problem does not become exacerbated. Here are some of the reasons to seek professional medical attention from a podiatrist.

A persistent wound

Attaining injuries on your feet is common place if you live an active lifestyle. However, a wound or a sore that does not heal will warrant medical attention. If the wound is festering, you could be at risk of developing an infection. If the infection is left unchecked, it could spread to the tissues in your leg and eventually make its way to your bone. This will become much harder to treat and could even result in amputation. If you suffer from diabetes, it is even more pertinent to seek the consult of a podiatrist as diabetic ulcers can become severely infected within a short period of time.

Toe bunions

These deformations will typically form at the bottom of your big toe. Bunions present themselves as roughened, red skin. They can swell and become quite painful if not remedied as soon as possible. There are various reasons why one may develop bunions on their feet. These reasons range from your posture as you walk, the use of improper footwear, or ill-fitting shoes. The development of a bunion should be looked at post haste so that the podiatrist can treat it and put you on the right path toward managing this ailment. This is especially important if it happens to be a genetic trait that will recur.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis refers to severe heel pain. This condition occurs when the tissues in your heel and sole of your foot become inflamed. If the inflammation originates from your Achilles, then you could be suffering from Achilles tendonitis. In children, heel pain is referred to as Severs. This typically occurs when the heel's growth plate becomes inflamed. Heel and sole pain can be quite debilitating. It is always best to seek the services of a podiatrist for treatment and pain management.

Seniors Deserve the Best

Seniors are like any other specialized group of people. They need services specific to their needs. Everything from nutrition to housekeeping to travel is different for seniors, and the services they receive should reflect that. I am a mental health care provider, and I work exclusively with people over the age of 65. My goal is to help educate the general population about the special needs of seniors and to inspire people to make their homes, businesses and lives more acceptable to the older generations. Seniors deserve our care and attention, and I hope that I can show others how to provide it.
