5 Back Pain Management Tips

Health & Medical Blog

Are you someone who suffers from chronic back pain? If so, you may have difficulty completing the simplest tasks and feel helpless. However, do not assume that all hope is lost. Back pain is a common problem and there are various treatments for it.

Here are some back pain management tips you may want to keep in mind.

Physical Therapy

If you have had back pain for a while, physical therapy may be one of the first things your doctor suggests. It is non-invasive and can help you relieve your back pain over time. During physical therapy, your therapist may perform several treatments, such as electrical stimulation, joint mobilization, and massage. They may also instruct you to perform various strengthening exercises at home to relieve your pain.

Stop Smoking

Whether you smoke occasionally or two packs a day, it may be a good idea to quit right now. Smoking does not just increase your chances of developing cancer and heart problems. It may also contribute to your back pain by reducing blood flow to your discs. Smoking can be a difficult habit to break on your own, so do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor.

Check Your Posture

Another back management tip to consider is checking your posture. Neglecting to sit up straight can put pressure on your spine and hurt your back. Always maintain proper posture as you sit down. If you have to sit for long periods of time, you should try to get up and walk occasionally.

Lose Weight

Too much weight can put unnecessary stress on your back. If you are currently overweight, you may notice that your back hurts more often. That is why it is worth it to get down to a healthy weight by reducing your calories and exercising more.

Lift Properly

There may come a time when you have to lift something heavy, like furniture or weights. When you do need to lift something, make sure to do it properly to avoid straining your back. Try to lift more with your legs instead of your back. If something is just too heavy, do not hesitate to ask someone to help you.

If you follow these back management tips, you may be able to finally relieve your back pain. If you have additional questions about back pain treatments, you should speak with a doctor with specializes in treating chronic back pain. For more information, contact a company like Sonoran Spine.

Seniors Deserve the Best

Seniors are like any other specialized group of people. They need services specific to their needs. Everything from nutrition to housekeeping to travel is different for seniors, and the services they receive should reflect that. I am a mental health care provider, and I work exclusively with people over the age of 65. My goal is to help educate the general population about the special needs of seniors and to inspire people to make their homes, businesses and lives more acceptable to the older generations. Seniors deserve our care and attention, and I hope that I can show others how to provide it.
